Indications for Mitral Valve Clipping When the mitral valve does not close properly, blood is leaking back into the heart. An open heart surgery is a possibility, but there is an alternative in many cases. Open heart surgery is sometimes too dangerous when the condition of the patient is weak. Mitral Valve clips is an alternative for open heart surgery. Cardiologists insert a catheter into the patients groin that travels up into the mitral valve. The clip is fed through the catheter, where it finally grasps and tightens the valves' leaflets, preventing blood from leaking. The clip takes in place, while the catheter is removed.
