G e n d e r R e a s s i g n m e n t Some people feel that their minds and bodies don't match up with their sexual identity, body characteristics or gender role. This feeling is commonly known as transsexualism – a type of gender identity conflict. They wish to live as the opposite gender and may transform their bodies through gender reassignment surgery – a collection of procedures also researed to as a "sex change." In addition to diagnosing patients and providing counsel, mental health professionals may assess an individual's eligibility and readiness for hormone therapy and surgery. Not all transsexuals need all three phases of therapy; each path to gender reassignment is tailored to the individual.
