Upright MRI

MRI scanners 

Most MRI scanners are horizontal. Patients are in a horizontal position and the patients are staying in a kind of tunnel.  For some patients a horizontal MRI scanner is very inconvenient. An upright MRI is more relaxed and does not give a claustrophobic feeling. The upright MRI is also used for MRI scans of children, sitting on their mothers lap.  Upright MRI’s are not very common in every hospital. Patients from several countries are visiting the centre. 

Better diagnostics 

The upright scanner is convenient, but the biggest advantage of an upright MRI however is that the scan can be made in several positions. This is for example important for MRI scans for spine, shoulder and lumbar diagnostics. The diagnostics can be set more precisely.  

Patients can be in a sitting, standing, bending or lying down position. In an upright MRI a scan can be a made in a weight bearing position. The upright MRI is able to perform positional imaging, an advantage in sports injuries. The patients can be placed into the position where they have the most pain.
